2. Nieuws in het Nederlands
Luba en ik zijn vanaf begin januari in Nederland. Ben en Lia hebben tot 15 januari al oppassend
verkenningen verricht in de Baya de Todos os Santos. Sedertdien ligt het schip er verlaten bij en wij
hopen het op 5 februari weer onbeschadigd terug te vinden. Diezelfde dag komt Hans B en enkele
dagen later Eric.
Ons bezoek aan Nederland was enerverend. Natuurlijk was er het blijde weerzien met vader en
kinderen en de rondhollende kleinzoon. En dan natuurlijk het grote feest in Delft bij het eredoctoraat
dat voor het eerst in de geschiedenis door alle faculteiten samen werd verleend. Maar de vreugde
werd overschaduwd door de ziekten van een goede vriend en van Kees' opvolger bij de STW. Ook
werden we naar verrast door het overlijden van Bert Klijn, van wie wij ANANDA - destijds EPEO
- kochten. Tenslotte werden Luba en ik ook nog door een griep geveld, die ons verhinderde een
aantal bezoeken af te leggen. Verstandige mensen verruilen in deze tijd Nederland voor de tropen;
dat wij het andersom deden hebben we geweten.
Eind van de maand gaan we een week naar Philadelphia voor Belver Griffith's memorial, ook een
droevig moment.
Het Utrechtse diner met de twee fysische Nobelprijswinnaars moeten wij helaas missen. Op dat
moment zeilen wij hopelijk naar Rio.
3. News in English
Luba and I are in The Netherlands from the beginning of January. Till January 15th Ben and Lia
explored the Baya de Todos os Santos while guarding the ship. Since that time she is alone and we
hope to find her back unharmed on February 5th. On that same day Hans B will arrive and a few
days later Eric.
Our visit to The Netherlands was enervating. Of course, there was the happy reunion with father,
children and the grandson, who was running around like a molecule in a diluted gas. And there was
the honorary doctorate in Delft, which was given for the first time in the history by all faculties
together. But the joy was shaded by the illness of a good friend and of Kees' successor at STW.
And then Bert Klijn passed away; we bought ANANDA - in those days EPEO - from him. Finally
Luba and I were struck by a very persistent flu, that kept us from paying a number of visits. Clever
people exchange The Netherlands for the tropics in this time of the year. But we did the opposite
and nature made sure we would not forget.
At the end of the month we shall be in Philadelphia during a week in relation to the memorial of
Belver Griffith. That will also be a sad moment.
The diner of the Utrecht University honouring her two new Nobel Laureats, we shall have to miss
unfortunately. At that time we hope to be sailing to Rio.
